"They took away our only child. They took away all his hopes and all his dreams." His mother said those words in court. Seconds later, his father delivered his own statement – with his fists.
On July 14, 2022, during a sentencing hearing at the Orangeburg County Courthouse in South Carolina, Willie Clay Fields attacked the man who killed his son. Lindy Lamont Jones had pleaded guilty the day before to the 2019 murder of 18-year-old Willie Antoine Fields - shot in the head and three times in the back.

As the victim's mother addressed the judge in tears, saying they took away her only child, the father suddenly sprinted past a deputy and punched Jones in the head. Jones was shackled and standing next to his lawyer when the blow landed. Deputies pulled Fields away. His wife called out to him to stop.
Fields was charged with contempt of court and third-degree assault and battery. Jones did not pursue charges against him. Jones was later sentenced to 35 years in prison.
