In 2011, during a road trip, Dylan Redwine and his older brother Cory accidentally discovered photos on their father's computer.
The photos depicted Mark Redwine wearing women's underwear and a diaper, and eating feces from a diaper. Dylan was "pretty disgusted" by the images, and the discovery damaged Dylan's relationship with his father.
On November 18, 2012, thirteen-year-old Dylan Redwine was on a court-ordered visit to his father's home in Durango, Colorado, for Thanksgiving break. He wasn't looking forward to the trip and didn't want to see his father. On the night he was killed, Dylan may have mentioned or shown his father the compromising photographs, triggering a violent rage. Dylan was last seen between 7:30 and 11:30 in the morning of November 19, 2012. Mark Redwine told investigators he left Dylan alone at home to run errands and returned to find him missing.
In June 2013, seven months after Dylan's disappearance, his partial remains were found in the wilderness about eight miles from Mark Redwine's home. Dylan's skull, which became key evidence during the trial, was not found until late 2015. The skull showed a fracture that happened around the time of Dylan's death as well as sharp force injuries. Investigators found Dylan's blood inside Redwine's residence in several different locations. Cadaver dogs picked up death scents in the laundry room, living room, and kitchen.
Mark Redwine was arrested in July 2017 and found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse in July 2021. He was sentenced to 48 years in prison.
