Seven Years After He Vanished, Joshua Maddux Was Found Inside a Chimney

On May 8, 2008, 18-year-old Joshua Maddux left his home in Woodland Park, Colorado, telling his family he was going for a walk. Joshua loved the outdoors and was accustomed to spending time by himself, so there was initially nothing unusual about him heading out that morning. But he never returned.

Five days later, his father, Michel Maddux, reported him missing. Family members and others searched for Joshua, but there was no sign of him. Years passed without an answer, leaving his family trapped in the painful uncertainty of not knowing what had happened to him.

Then, in August 2015, seven years after Joshua disappeared, workers began demolishing an abandoned cabin in Woodland Park. During the demolition, they made a horrifying discovery inside the cabin's chimney: human remains lodged deep within the structure.

The remains were badly decomposed, so investigators relied on dental records and additional identifying characteristics to determine who they belonged to. They were eventually identified as Joshua Maddux. The cabin was less than a mile from the home he had left seven years earlier.

The discovery immediately raised a disturbing question: How had Joshua ended up inside the chimney in the first place?

According to Teller County Coroner Al Born, there was no evidence of physical trauma. Investigators found no broken bones or gunshot wounds, and toxicology testing did not reveal drugs. Born believed Joshua may have attempted to enter the cabin by climbing down the chimney and became trapped inside. His death was ultimately classified as accidental, although the official cause of death remained undetermined.

That explanation, however, did not answer every question surrounding the case. Why would Joshua have entered an abandoned cabin through its chimney? What exactly happened after he became trapped? And why had no one discovered him during the years he was missing?

The chimney itself was positioned behind a large piece of furniture, which helps explain why the remains went undiscovered for so long. The cabin had also been abandoned for years before demolition began.

There have been many theories about Joshua's final hours, but investigators never established a definitive explanation for why he entered the chimney. What is documented is much simpler and, in its own way, just as haunting: an 18-year-old left home for a walk in May 2008 and vanished. Seven years later, his remains were discovered less than a mile away, hidden inside a place almost nobody had thought to search.

Joshua's family finally had an answer about what happened to him, but not all the answers they had spent seven years waiting for.

The official ruling was accidental death. The circumstances that led Joshua Maddux into that chimney remain unexplained.
