She Escaped Through a Window — Then Realized the Intruder Had Followed Her

In September 2014, actress Melora Rivera was asleep inside her home in Venice, California, when she suddenly realized that a stranger had broken in. She had almost no time to think. Instead of confronting him, Rivera grabbed her phone and climbed through a window onto the second-story roof, still wearing the flannel shirt she had been sleeping in.

She crouched beneath a roof ledge and called 911, hoping the intruder would remain inside.

Then she realized he had followed her outside.

A neighbor, Alexandria Thompson, happened to see the terrifying scene from the street and began taking photographs. One of those images captured Rivera huddled on the roof while the man appeared just above her, looking over the ledge in her direction. The photograph looked like something from a horror movie, but Rivera was actually trapped there, with a drop of more than 20 feet below her and nowhere safe to run.

Rivera later explained that her biggest fear was being forced into a confrontation with the stranger while she was still trapped on the roof.

Police arrived within minutes, while firefighters prepared to help Rivera down. Officers eventually persuaded the man to surrender, and he was taken into custody. He was identified as 29-year-old Christian Hicks and was charged in connection with the break-in.

What made the photograph even more unsettling was that Rivera wasn't simply hiding from someone inside her home. She had escaped to what she believed was a safer place—only to discover that the person she was running from had followed her there.

And that single photograph captured the exact moment when she realized there was nowhere left to hide.
