Couple Starves 5-Year-Old Daughter to Death.
A Baltimore couple has pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse resulting in death after their 5-year-old daughter died of starvation, weighing only 17.5 pounds at the time of her death.
Bernice Byrd, 33, and Gerald Byrd, 36, entered their pleas on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026, in Baltimore City Circuit Court. They also pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse related to the neglect of their 6-year-old son, who was found alive but severely emaciated.
The charges stem from an investigation that began on Oct. 14, 2024, when Baltimore Police responded to the family's home after receiving a call about an unresponsive child. Officers discovered 5-year-old Zona Byrd lying in a bed on the second floor. She was cold to the touch and pronounced dead at the scene.
ccording to the Office of the State's Attorney for Baltimore City, an autopsy confirmed that Zona died from severe malnutrition. At 5 years old, she weighed just 17.5 pounds, a weight typical for an infant, not a kindergarten-aged child. The medical examiner found no muscle tone on her body.
Authorities also discovered the couple’s 6-year-old son in the home. He weighed only 35 pounds and was so weak he could barely stand or walk. He was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he remained for treatment for nearly two weeks. Two other children in the home were also placed in care.
Investigators described a disturbing scene inside the residence. While the kitchen9MM cupboards were completely bare and the refrigerator contained only a salad, detectives found a stash of non-perishable food locked inside the parents’ bedroom closet, inaccessible to the children. The freezer was reportedly full of meat.
When questioned by police, neither parent could recall the last time they had fed their children. Gerald Byrd reportedly told investigators that the children would often search through the garbage for food.
"No punishment will be as severe for these defendants as living with the knowledge that they murdered their innocent child," State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates said in a statement. "As a father, the facts of this case are nauseating, and my heart continues to ache for Zona, who is gone from us far too soon."
Under the terms of the plea agreement, the Byrds face a maximum sentence of life in prison, with all but 70 years suspended. Their sentencing is scheduled for June 10, 2026.
