Background and Controversy

The case has sparked significant community and official frustration due to Taylor's recent criminal history:

Prior Arrests: Taylor had been arrested in August 2024 for the sexual battery and rape of another woman.

Recent Release: Those charges were dismissed, and he was released from prison on January 12, 2026.

System Failure: The victim of the current attack already had an active protective order against Taylor. Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse expressed intense frustration during a press conference, questioning why the suspect was free to commit such a "horrendous act".

Based on reports from September 2025, 38-year-old

Edwin Cruz Gomez of Uniondale, New York, was arrested and charged with murder after intentionally driving his SUV into a group of people in Queens, killing 16-year-old Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez. The fatal incident occurred on September 13, 2025, following a confrontation regarding sexual harassment.

Details of the Incident:

The Rejection: Prosecutors state that Gomez, who was intoxicated, sexually propositioned 16-year-old Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez and her mother outside a restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue in Elmhurst, Queens. After the girl and her family rejected his advances, a verbal and physical altercation occurred between the suspect and the victim's family.

The Attack: Following the confrontation, the family walked away, but prosecutors allege Gomez intentionally drove his 2009 Chevrolet Suburban onto the sidewalk, pinning the 16-year-old against a pole, causing fatal injuries.

Arrest and Charges: Gomez fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended. He was charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, vehicular manslaughter, and driving under the influence.

Charges and Bail: Prosecutors indicated his blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.137%, nearly twice the legal limit. He was ordered to be held without bail and faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Immigration Status: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer against Gomez, identifying him as an illegal alien from Honduras
