Reyna Angélica Marroquín was a young Salvadoran woman who arrived in the United States in the mid-1960s, hoping to build a new life. She found work at a plastic flower factory in New York and also helped as a nanny in a nearby home. Over time, she began a relationship with her employer, Howard Elkins, a married man with children.

In 1969, Angélica became pregnant with his child, but complications arose soon after. Although Elkins had promised to leave his wife, Angélica decided to tell the truth. She called Elkins’ wife to confess her relationship with him and that she was expecting his baby. Mysteriously, after that phone call, Angélica disappeared completely. Her family in El Salvador never heard from her again for decades.

It wasn’t until 1999, when a couple purchased Elkins’ old house in Jericho, New York, that the mystery began to unravel. While cleaning the basement, they found a dusty old barrel containing the mummified remains of a pregnant woman, along with artificial flowers, a small medallion, and a notebook with phone numbers. Investigators identified the remains as Angélica Marroquín through the residence number in the notebook, and the barrel matched those used at her factory. Howard Elkins, who had retired in Florida, denied any involvement but died by suicide the following day. DNA testing later confirmed he was the father of her unborn child, finally bringing the truth to light after three decades of silence.
