They tied young Clara Fry to a hitch post in 1879 San Antonio—ropes biting skin, sun burning hot enough to blister thought

They tied young Clara Fry to a hitch post in 1879 San Antonio—ropes biting skin, sun burning hot enough to blister thought. A loaf of bread was her crime, hunger her judge, silence her sentence. She was seventeen, bones sharp from weeks of scraping, eyes fierce enough to shame men twice her size.  But cruelty wasn’t new to frontier dust, and that day they meant to break her. Instead, she chewed through the rope with blood-raw gums, crawled into shade like a dying calf, and slipped away before dusk touched her heels. Some folks run from shame. Clara ran toward survival. Years rolled like wagon wheels, rough and relentless. She worked cattle in Nueces scrubland, slept under mesquite thorn, and fought off men who mistook a girl alone for prey. Fingers split, back burned, she drove strays through rattlesnake brush and river mud, wrangling land and respect one bitter sunrise at a time. By twenty-five she owned fifty head and a patch of earth no storm could strip from her. When ...

Anneliese Michel was subjected to 67 exorcisms that ultimately left her dead on July 1, 1976 at the age of just 23.

Image
In late 1960s Germany, a teenage girl named Anneliese Michel suddenly began exhibiting some disturbing behaviors. She tore the clothing from her body, knocked religious icons from the walls, ripped apart rosaries, hid under the table and barked like a dog, and compulsively did 400 squats a day. When she refused to eat, she claimed that demons forbid her from doing so, and instead chewed on spiders, coal, and flies. She ran uncontrollably around the house and flung herself about with abandon, often injuring herself in the process. At night, she would only sleep on a stone floor, when she wasn't screaming for hours on end. Eventually, her highly religious parents became certain she was possessed by demons and subjected her to nearly a year of exorcisms. By June of 1976, the exorcisms had left her emaciated, with fractured teeth, bruised limbs, and black eyes. In her last session on June 30, 1976, she uttered some of her last words when she asked the priests for absolution. The...

On May 21, 1982, 23-year-old Diana Avera was arrested for disorderly conduct and sent to Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama

Image
On May 21, 1982, 23-year-old Diana Avera was arrested for disorderly conduct and sent to Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama — a psychiatric facility known for housing some of the state’s most fragile patients. Diana suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and underwent multiple electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) sessions along with other treatments. When her family came to visit, they barely recognized her. The once lively young woman they knew now moved slowly, spoke in fragments, and seemed lost in a daze. “She was like a zombie,” her loved ones recalled — hollow-eyed and broken. Then, one day in August 1982, Diana vanished. She escaped from the hospital grounds and disappeared without a trace. More than four decades later, her fate remains unknown. No one knows where she went, or what became of her after that summer day. All that’s left are unanswered questions — and a family still waiting for the truth about what really happened to Diana Avera.

The final photo of Kris Kremers, a Dutch tourist who disappeared with her friend Lisanne Froon during a jungle hike in Panama on April 1, 2014. When their families stopped receiving daily updates, they flew to Panama on April 6 and joined police in a ten-day search with no results.  Ten weeks later, a local woman found a backpack with Froon’s belongings, including phones and a camera. The phones showed repeated failed emergency calls. Froon’s died on April 4, while Kremers’s was turned on intermittently until April 11, often with the wrong PIN entered.  The camera contained 90 flash photos taken in darkness, including one showing bl*od on Kremers’s head. Two months after the backpack was found, scattered remains, including a pelvis and a boot with a foot inside, were recovered and identified as the two women. What happened to them remains unsolved.

Just below the glittering casinos and neon signs of Las Vegas lies a secret world most tourists will never see

Image
Just below the glittering casinos and neon signs of Las Vegas lies a secret world most tourists will never see — a labyrinth of flood-control tunnels stretching hundreds of miles under the city. Down there, far from the Strip’s glamour, an estimated thousand people live — veterans, addicts, and families who lost everything. They’ve built makeshift homes with furniture, shelves, and even decorations, turning the dark tunnels into fragile sanctuaries. They live in constant danger — one flash flood could wipe out everything they own. Yet many say they prefer the quiet, the privacy, and the peace below to the chaos above. It’s hard to imagine that just a few feet beneath the jackpot bells and champagne toasts, people are fighting for survival in the shadows of America’s brightest city.

The woman in this post is Viridiana Arevalo, a woman who was brutally murdêrêd by her brother, Edwardo Arevalo, in Texas. She was eight months pregnant but unmarried; she had a boyfriend. Viridiana’s brother was angry with her for being pregnant out of wedlock. He considered her an “embarrassment” and wanted to purge the ‘shame’ from their family. On December 16, 2019, Edwardo who was 19 at the time took hold of his sister’s neck and strângled her to deâth before writing a fake sui-cide note which he left for the family to read. He took Viridiana’s body and dumped it in an alley where it was later found. The investigators examined the surveillance cameras close to the crime scene and saw Edwardo at the scene before the body was found. He admitted to the crime saying it was better she was not in the family as she was an “embarrassment” to the whole family. In July 2023, Edwardo was sentenced to 40 years in prison

John Adams once shared a bed with Benjamin Franklin, and they argued all night about whether to keep the window open.

Image
John Adams once shared a bed with Benjamin Franklin, and they argued all night about whether to keep the window open. In September 1776, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin traveled together to Staten Island as part of a failed peace delegation with Britain during the early stages of the American Revolution.  On their journey, the two men stopped at a small New Jersey inn that had only one available room, and one bed. Adams, a New England lawyer known for his rigid habits, was forced to share it with Franklin, who was nearly 30 years his senior and famous for his unorthodox views on health and comfort. According to Adams’ diary, the night quickly turned into a debate. Franklin insisted the window stay open to allow “fresh air,” arguing that night air was not dangerous, as many people then believed. Adams, adhering to the common 18th-century fear of “miasmas” or bad air causing illness, wanted it shut tight. Franklin, a lifelong advocate of ventilation, lectured Adams on h...

Norman Grim, 65, is scheduled to be executed Tuesday evening for the savage rape and murder of his 41-year-old neighbor, Cynthia Campbell, a Pensacola lawyer lured to his home under the pretense of a coffee invitation — in full view of a responding deputy. The lethal injection is set for 6 p.m. ET at Florida State Prison in Raiford, marking the state’s 15th execution of 2025 — nearly double the previous annual record of eight, set in 1984 and 2014. If carried out, Grim will be the 41st person executed nationwide this year, a figure not seen since 2012. On the morning of July 27, 1998, Campbell called 911 after a window in her home was broken. A deputy found Grim outside but accepted his explanation that he was checking on a barking dog. As the officer stood by, Grim repeatedly invited Campbell over for coffee. The deputy encouraged her to go, court records show. She walked next door — and into a fatal ambush. Inside Grim’s home, he bludgeoned her 18 times with a hammer...

The Gestapo called her the most dangerous woman in Europe. She walked with a limp and a wooden leg named Cuthbert. Occupied France, 1942. Nazi soldiers controlled every road, every village, every shadow. The Gestapo had informants everywhere. One wrong word could mean torture or death. And somewhere in that nightmare, a woman with a basket and a headscarf was making them look like fools. She limped through marketplaces. She chatted with farmers. She poured milk and swept floors. And while Nazi officers dismissed her as just another peasant woman, she was coordinating sabotage operations that were tearing their supply lines apart. The Gestapo knew someone was behind the attacks. They just couldn't figure out who. They called her "The Limping Lady." Her real name was Virginia Hall. Born in Baltimore in 1906, Virginia was brilliant, adventurous, and spoke French, German, Italian, and Russian fluently. She wanted to be a diplomat—to serve her country on the world stage...

The Babi Yar Massacre, which occurred over two days in September 1941, remains one of the most horrific examples of mass murder during the Holocaust.

Image
The Babi Yar Massacre, which occurred over two days in September 1941, remains one of the most horrific examples of mass murder during the Holocaust. In Kyiv, Ukraine, nearly 34,000 Jews, including men, women, and children, were rounded up by Nazi Einsatzgruppen (mobile killing units) and local Ukrainian collaborators. They were marched to the Babi Yar ravine on the outskirts of the city, where they were forced to undress, herded to the edge of the ravine, and shot in cold blood. Their bodies were left in mass graves. This atrocity marked the beginning of systematic mass executions in the occupied Soviet Union, and it foreshadowed even more widespread killing across Eastern Europe. The brutal scale of the massacre was compounded by the fact that it took place in the heart of a major city, with the killings being carried out in full view of civilians and the surrounding community. Despite attempts by Soviet authorities to suppress the memory of Babi Yar and its horrors, th...
