Officer Kills 1-Year-Old After Firing Into Vehicle.
A 1-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon after police shot into a vehicle outside a Walmart in Senatobia, Mississippi, while responding to a reported shoplifting call.
Officers from the Senatobia Police Department and the Tate County Sheriff’s Office were called to the store. According to statements released by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, officers saw two adults and a child running from the building and getting into a car.
When officers tried to stop the vehicle, authorities say the driver allegedly drove toward them and nearly hit one of the officers. An officer then fired shots into the car. The vehicle left the scene and went to a nearby hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. One woman in the car was critically injured. The child’s mother was not physically hurt, according to family members who spoke with local outlets.
The boy has been identified as Kohen Wiley. His family is asking for answers and saying the situation could have been handled differently.
Witnesses at the scene told local news they were stunned by how quickly things escalated. Some questioned why officers didn’t simply follow the vehicle and get a tag number instead of firing shots with a child inside.
