On the evening of October 7, 1949, aspiring actress Jean Spangler departed from her Los Angeles home, informing her sister-in-law that she planned to meet her ex-husband before heading to work as an extra on a film set.
Last seen at a grocery store around 6:00 p.m. several blocks from her home, Jean Spangler's tattered purse was found two days later in Griffith Park, about 5.5 miles away. The purse contained a letter addressed to a "Kirk".
Having recently appeared in a film alongside Kirk Douglas, Jean Spangler's connection led to Kirk Douglas contacting the police upon learning of her disappearance. He alibied himself by stating he was in Palm Springs at the time, a claim that the police accepted.
To this day Jean Spangler’s fate is not known. Theories range from a botched abortion to her fleeing with Los Angeles gangsters. But no concrete evidence for any of the theories has been established.
