Sunny afternoon in April 2023, an incident captured on video reminded the world of something deeply simple yet so easily forgotten: wild animals don’t play by our rules.

The clip shows a young woman holding a bunch of bananas in front of a large elephant — likely in a semi-captivity setting in India. She teases the animal by holding the banana out, then pulling it back as the tusker reaches for it. The elephant, calm at first, watches. Perhaps curious, perhaps amused.
