Sixteen-year-old Hydi Cain ended the evening of January 7, 2024, in what seemed like a calm, ordinary way. She and her mother had spoken quietly about some recent choices Hydi had been making, but the conversation stayed gentle, not heated. When Hydi said she was heading to bed just before midnight, nothing felt unusual — just a mother and daughter winding down for the night.



But only twenty minutes later, everything changed. Hydi’s mother suddenly heard her daughter shouting at someone while sitting at her MacBook. Before she could make sense of what was happening, Hydi grabbed her mother’s car keys and rushed out the door.

Startled, her mother ran after her. She managed to reach the car just in time, pulling the keys out before Hydi could drive away. The moment the engine stopped, Hydi flung the car door open, leapt out, and took off into the night — wearing only pajamas, without shoes, and without looking back.
