Kristen Modafferi was a college student spending her summer in San Francisco
Kristen Modafferi was a college student spending her summer in San Francisco, working as a barista at a Spinelli’s coffee shop inside the Crocker Galleria mall.
On June 1, 1997, just minutes after finishing her shift, coworkers noticed Kristen on the second floor of the mall. She was speaking with an unidentified blonde woman. The conversation was brief. No one recognized the woman. She has never been confirmed as a friend, never identified, and has never come forward.
Moments later, Kristen Modafferi stopped at an ATM inside the mall and withdrew cash. That transaction is the last confirmed proof that she was there. After that, Kristen walked out of the Crocker Galleria and vanished without a trace.
She never returned to work to collect her $400 paycheck. She left behind all of her belongings in the room she was renting. There was no note, no goodbye, no sign that she planned to leave her life behind.
Her disappearance was so deeply troubling that it eventually led to the creation of Kristen’s Law, aimed at improving how missing adult cases are investigated. Yet despite this lasting impact, Kristen Modafferi herself has never been found.
Her case remains open—frozen in time—with one haunting question still unanswered:
Who was the blonde woman, and what did she know?
