Mom Tells 11-Year-Old to Walk 19 Miles to School.
A 35-year-old San Antonio woman is facing a felony child endangerment charge after police say she told her daughter to hoof it nearly 20 miles to elementary school on her own the morning after a night of drinking and fighting with her boyfriend.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Lucia Victoria Marie Cruz had been arguing with her boyfriend Tuesday night. She knocked back a full bottle of wine and passed out.
Wednesday morning, her 11-year-old tried waking her up for a ride to school. Cruz allegedly brushed her off, said walk it yourself, and went right back to sleep. The girl, who doesn’t have a cell phone, started the trek.
About a mile down the road a witness saw the little girl walking alone in the traffic and picked her up, dropping her off with school resource officers. Deputies then headed to the house, where Cruz told them she knew her daughter was out walking the whole 19-mile route.
Cruz was arrested and posted bond the next day.
The father has primary custody but on this night the child was staying with Cruz.
