Mom Left 12-Year-Old Dying with Untreated Diabetes.
A jury in Evansville, Indiana, convicted a mother of neglecting her diabetic daughter until the girl died at home last year.
Ashley Marie Bredhold, 40, was found guilty on two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. The jury came back with the verdict in less than a day. Sentencing is set for March 19, and she could face up to 40 years in prison.
Her daughter, Alice Bredhold, was only 12 when she died on July 4, 2024, from diabetic ketoacidosis at the family's home. Alice had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes back in March 2020, and her blood sugar levels had been spiking out of control for a long time.
School nurses flagged the problem dozens of times. There were at least 34 high readings since January 2024, with some over 300 and others topping 600. The Department of Child Services stepped in after those alerts, but things didn't improve.
Alice's Dexcom monitor had stopped working and fallen off. The insulin pen at home wasn't functioning, and it didn't get replaced in the days leading up to her death. When the girl said drinking water felt like acid, her mom told her to drink more anyway, according to evidence presented at trial.
Alice was found unresponsive in her bedroom. Her parents waited hours before calling 911, court documents show. The home had signs of poor conditions, including trash and bugs, as noted in early police reports.
Her father, Brent Bredhold, was convicted in October 2025 on a lesser charge of neglect resulting in serious bodily injury. He got nine years in prison
