Man Who Killed Wife Said He Prefers Prison Over Dealing with Her.
An 80-year-old Florida man faces a first-degree murder charge after deputies say he shot his 83-year-old wife to death inside their Orlando home Saturday evening during a fight about taking a cruise.
William Elwood Simmons called 911 himself around 5:20 p.m. and reported his wife "was down," according to police accounts. When Orange County sheriff's deputies showed up, Simmons was waiting in the garage and immediately told them, "I do know what happened, I did it."
Deputies found Nancy Lee Simmons dead in the kitchen from a single shotgun wound. A shotgun lay on the floor next to a spent shell casing, authorities said.
During questioning at the station, Simmons laid it all out, according to the same documents. The couple had been arguing in the kitchen about cruise plans when Nancy started yelling "f— you, you bastard" over and over. He walked to the bedroom closet, grabbed the shotgun, came back, and fired once after she said it again.
Simmons also allegedly told investigators he was tired of dealing with his wife's dementia and would rather be locked up than keep going through it. He said he'd "endured her dementia for far too long" but still loved "the old Nancy," the reports state.
