 Today, 81 years ago — on 27 January 1945 — the world witnessed a moment that marked both an end and a beginning:

Soviet Red Army soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in occupied Poland. 

At liberation, roughly 7,000 prisoners were found alive in the Main Camp, Birkenau, and Monowitz — many gravely ill, emaciated, and weakened by unimaginable suffering. Among them were children, teenagers, and adults who had endured the brutal horrors of this place. 

For 1,689 days, Auschwitz stood as a site of industrialized murder, pain, and cruelty — where over 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were murdered as part of the Nazis’ systematic genocide. Tens of thousands more — Roma and Sinti people, Poles, political prisoners, Soviet POWs, and other persecuted groups — also lost their lives here. 

In the weeks before liberation, the SS forced nearly 60,000 prisoners on brutal death marches westward; thousands perished along the way. Only those too sick or weak to march remained behind. 

Today, 27 January is observed as International Holocaust Remembrance Day — a day to honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, and to reaffirm our collective promise:

Never again. 

We remember the innocent lives cut short, the survivors who bore witness, and the lessons that history has etched into the conscience of humanity. Let us commit — especially for younger generations — to keep these memories alive, to reject hatred and bigotry in all forms, and to stand united against antisemitism, racism, and all ideologies of hate.



We remember. We mourn. We vow to never forget.
