This photo was taken in January of 1959 in the northern Ural Mountains of Soviet Russia. The people smiling into the camera are experienced hikers on a winter expedition. None of them knew this would be one of the last photos ever taken of the group.

Sometime during the night, they abandoned their tent in freezing temperatures. The tent was later found cut open from the inside. Some of the hikers were discovered barefoot in the snow. Others were found months later with severe injuries that looked more like the result of a powerful impact than exposure to the cold.

Several had no visible external wounds but suffered massive internal trauma. One was missing her tongue. Others were missing their eyes.

No clear explanation has ever fully accounted for all of the evidence. Avalanches, military testing, infrasound, and other theories have been suggested, but none explain every detail.

More than sixty years later, the Dyatlov Pass incident remains one of the most chilling and debated mysteries in outdoor survival history.
