Jonas Eklund was a quiet, gentle seventeen-year-old. Since his parents’ divorce, he lived alone with his mother, Katrin, who had always been wary of his friends. She worried they sometimes took advantage of his docile nature, though Jonas never complained, never said a word.
One spring evening, with Katrin out for the day, Jonas invited some friends over. Nothing seemed alarming at the time.
But that night, when Katrin returned home, Jonas was gone. The lights were off, and the most unsettling detail caught her eye: his room was impossibly tidy, unnervingly pristine, every object in place as if someone had carefully staged it.
She called his friends. They all claimed to have gone home hours earlier, knowing nothing of Jonas’ whereabouts. The next day, the police were alerted. Weeks of searching, interrogations, and investigation yielded nothing. Jonas had vanished without a trace.
A year later, exhausted by grief and uncertainty, Katrin decided to move and start anew. While clearing out Jonas’ room, she lifted the mattress—and found it. A large, dried brown stain, partially hidden under the sheets, unmistakably blood.
The immaculate order she had marveled at that night was not a sign of care or maturity. It was a cover. A staging. Someone had cleaned, rearranged, and concealed the truth.
From that day forward, one chilling thought haunted her: Jonas may have never left the house. And if she had returned just an hour earlier… she might still have known where he was.
