In March 1993, six-year-old Willie Nesler testified in a California courtroom that his babysitter, 35-year-old Daniel Driver, had molested him. Driver had a prior record for child sexual abuse, but was free on bail during the trial. On March 30, Willie’s mother, Ellie Nesler, entered the Tuolumne County courthouse with a small-caliber revolver hidden in her purse.



While the court was in recess, she approached Driver, who was seated in the courtroom, and fired five shots into his head and neck at close range, killing him instantly. Witnesses, including attorneys and court staff, watched in shock as she calmly surrendered her weapon to a bailiff.


Nesler told investigators she believed the justice system had failed to protect her son and feared Driver would harm other children. Her actions sparked nationwide debate over vigilante justice, victims’ rights, and the limits of legal protection.

In 1994, she was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison, later reduced for good behavior. In 2008, she died from breast cancer.

Despite many years of hard work by investigators, the identity of the Buckskin Girl remained unknown for over 30 years. On April 9, 2018, the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory announced that they had identified the woman as 21-year-old Marcia Lenore King from Little Rock, Arkansas. Marcia had last been seen by her family in 1980. Although she wasn’t officially reported missing, her family had kept searching for her. The identification was made possible by detailed DNA testing. Sadly, the person who caused her death has still not been found.
