In 1913, while traveling through Mongolia, French photographer Albert Kahn captured an image that would haunt the world for decades:

a woman locked inside a wooden box, abandoned in the vast, unforgiving desert.

Her “crime” — according to local tradition — was adultery, a transgression punished not with a trial… but with slow death.
