The Babi Yar Massacre, which occurred over two days in September 1941, remains one of the most horrific examples of mass murder during the Holocaust. In Kyiv, Ukraine, nearly 34,000 Jews, including men, women, and children, were rounded up by Nazi Einsatzgruppen (mobile killing units) and local Ukrainian collaborators. They were marched to the Babi Yar ravine on the outskirts of the city, where they were forced to undress, herded to the edge of the ravine, and shot in cold blood. Their bodies were left in mass graves.



This atrocity marked the beginning of systematic mass executions in the occupied Soviet Union, and it foreshadowed even more widespread killing across Eastern Europe. The brutal scale of the massacre was compounded by the fact that it took place in the heart of a major city, with the killings being carried out in full view of civilians and the surrounding community. Despite attempts by Soviet authorities to suppress the memory of Babi Yar and its horrors, the massacre eventually became a symbol of Nazi brutality and collaboration. It was memorialized in literature, art, and history, standing as a stark reminder of the depths of human cruelty during the Holocaust.

On April 16, 1947, Rudolf Höss was executed in the old field of Auschwitz I, in occupied Poland. As the founder and first commander of the Auschwitz complex, he had overseen one of the largest mass killing systems of the Holocaust during World War II.   After Germany’s defeat, Höss was captured by British forces in 1946. He later testified at the Nuremberg Trials before being tried by the National Supreme Court of Poland.  The court found him guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death.   His execution was carried out beside the ruins of the old Gestapo building, only a few meters from the villa where he had lived with his family while the extermination complex was in operation. In April 1981, the body of a young white woman was found in a ditch on Greenlee Road in Newton Township, Ohio. She was wearing a buckskin poncho, so investigators called her the "Buckskin Girl." That same day, her body was examined. It was found that she had suffered serious injuries to her head and neck before being strangled to death about 48 hours before her body was found. Despite many years of hard work by investigators, the identity of the Buckskin Girl remained unknown for over 30 years. On April 9, 2018, the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory announced that they had identified the woman as 21-year-old Marcia Lenore King from Little Rock, Arkansas. Marcia had last been seen by her family in 1980. Although she wasn’t officially reported missing, her family had kept searching for her. The identification was made possible by detailed DNA testing. Sadly, the person who caused her death has still not been found.
