On 20 June, 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her five children, 7-year-old Noah, 5-year-old John, 3-year-old Paul, 2-year-old Luke, and 6-month-old Mary, one by one in the bathtub of their Clear Lake, Texas, home. After her husband left for work, she methodically killed each child, with Noah being the last after attempting to run away. She then called police and her husband, confessing to what she had done.

Yates had suffered from severe postpartum depression and psychosis following the births of her children, experiencing multiple psychiatric hospitalisations and suicide attempts.

Just weeks before the murders, her antipsychotic medication had been discontinued.

She was charged with capital murder and tried in 2002. The jury convicted her and sentenced her to life in prison, rejecting the death penalty. However, in 2005, an appeals court overturned the conviction due to false testimony from prosecution psychiatrist Park Dietz, who claimed a non-existent television episode had influenced her actions.

In a 2006 retrial, a jury found Yates not guilty by reason of insanity. She was committed to Kerrville State Hospital, a mental health facility in Texas, where she remains today.
