 Norman Grim, 65, is scheduled to be executed Tuesday evening for the savage rape and murder of his 41-year-old neighbor, Cynthia Campbell, a Pensacola lawyer lured to his home under the pretense of a coffee invitation — in full view of a responding deputy.



The lethal injection is set for 6 p.m. ET at Florida State Prison in Raiford, marking the state’s 15th execution of 2025 — nearly double the previous annual record of eight, set in 1984 and 2014. If carried out, Grim will be the 41st person executed nationwide this year, a figure not seen since 2012.


On the morning of July 27, 1998, Campbell called 911 after a window in her home was broken. A deputy found Grim outside but accepted his explanation that he was checking on a barking dog.


As the officer stood by, Grim repeatedly invited Campbell over for coffee. The deputy encouraged her to go, court records show. She walked next door — and into a fatal ambush.


Inside Grim’s home, he bludgeoned her 18 times with a hammer and stabbed her 11 times, mostly in the heart, before 🍇’ing her, according to trial evidence. He wrapped her body in carpet and sheets and dumped it in Pensacola Bay. A fisherman discovered the remains just two hours later.


Deputies questioned Grim but lacked probable cause for an arrest. He fled Florida, triggering a four-day nationwide manhunt that ended peacefully in Oklahoma at a relative’s home.


Sixteen years before Campbell’s murder, Grim was convicted of a one-day crime spree in Pensacola. He kidnapped a woman at 5 a.m. (she escaped in his car), broke into two homes, injured a resident, and attempted to abduct a 14-year-old girl where he served nine years in prison.


At the time of the 1998 killing, he was on parole for burglary. Prosecutors highlighted this history to justify the death penalty.
