UPDATE!! Arkansas Parents’ Charges Upgraded to Murder After 7-Year-Old Son Starved to Death
Russellville, Ark. — Prosecutors have upgraded charges against Chris Freeman, 39, and Katelyn Freeman, 27, to murder after investigators determined their 7-year-old son died from deliberate starvation and abuse.
The case began when the Freemans rushed the boy to Dardanelle Regional Medical Center last week. Doctors found him pale, limp, and weighing only 28 pounds. He was transferred to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, where staff said his condition reflected years of chronic malnutrition. He did not survive.
Police later searched the family’s home on Sandstone Circle and discovered a closet converted into a cell. Investigators said the child was often tied with rope inside, with human waste on the floor and heavy wear on the walls and door fixtures.
Authorities also found well-stocked food supplies and thousands of dollars in cash, raising questions about the couple’s refusal to feed or care for the boy.
According to police, the Freemans admitted to locking him in the closet and withholding medical attention out of fear and embarrassment.
Two younger siblings, ages 5 and 3, were also found in the home. One showed early signs of malnutrition, and both have since been placed in protective custody.
Police Chief David Ewing called the case “not only physical but also mental torture,” and described it as one of the most disturbing examples of child abuse the region has ever encountered.
The Freemans remain held at the Pope County Detention Center as prosecutors move forward with the upgraded charges. #crime #truecrime
