22-year-old David Bain came home after delivering newspapers on the morning of June 20th,1994 to discover his family had been wiped out in their Dunedin, New Zealand family house.

In a state of panic, he called the emergency line exclaiming "They're all dead, they're all dead."

Examining the crime scene, David became the prime suspect. There were thoughts that the incident was a case of murder-suicide but the proposition was not upheld for long.

On the crime scene, the rifle used to commit the crime was found lying close to Robin Bain, David’s father, but surprisingly it only had David’s finger print. Also on the crime scene was a message on a computer that read "sorry, you are the only one who deserved to stay".

David was questioned but he could not give account of what transpired between the time he came home and his calling the emergency number. There was close to 30 minutes delay, he claimed he passed out. He also sustained bruises and cuts on his face, he also had no explanation for them. It was determined he had murdered his family to inherit the money they saved for their new home.

He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison in May 1995.

Joseph Francis Karam who believed in David’s innocence fought vehemently until he was acquitted of all charges in June 2009.

Apparently, his father who was suspected of having incestuous relationship with one of his daughters killed his family and himself with opera gloves on.

A compensation of $925,000 was paid to David Bain, but this is incomparable to the agony he went through.
