The photo below was taken in 1948 in Chicago, United States. It shows four siblings and their mother at the entrance to their house.

 In front of them is a gigantic sign saying: "4 children for sale inquire within."


As it happens, the photo was real and the children were indeed on sale. Their parents, Ray (forty) and Lucille (twenty-four) Chalifoux were both unemployed and poverty-stricken. They were facing eviction from their apartment for not paying the rent. Their price tag will blow your mind, and what happened afterwards was outrageous and unreal.

It's possible that the sign "4 children for sale" was just a cry for help. Once the newspapers around the country published the story, help actually came in the form of job offers, apartments, and money.

Nobody really knows what happened in the following two years. However, in 1950, father Ray left, and the family fell apart. Mother Lucille began dating a man who didn't want anything to do with the children; therefore, she gave them away.

Lana was adopted, RaeAnn and Milton were sold for $2 (around $22 in today's value), and Sue Ellen was adopted. Bedford, who was still in his mother's womb at the time the photo had been taken in 1948, was adopted as well.

On April 16, 1947, Rudolf Höss was executed in the old field of Auschwitz I, in occupied Poland. As the founder and first commander of the Auschwitz complex, he had overseen one of the largest mass killing systems of the Holocaust during World War II.   After Germany’s defeat, Höss was captured by British forces in 1946. He later testified at the Nuremberg Trials before being tried by the National Supreme Court of Poland.  The court found him guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death.   His execution was carried out beside the ruins of the old Gestapo building, only a few meters from the villa where he had lived with his family while the extermination complex was in operation. In April 1981, the body of a young white woman was found in a ditch on Greenlee Road in Newton Township, Ohio. She was wearing a buckskin poncho, so investigators called her the "Buckskin Girl." That same day, her body was examined. It was found that she had suffered serious injuries to her head and neck before being strangled to death about 48 hours before her body was found. Despite many years of hard work by investigators, the identity of the Buckskin Girl remained unknown for over 30 years. On April 9, 2018, the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory announced that they had identified the woman as 21-year-old Marcia Lenore King from Little Rock, Arkansas. Marcia had last been seen by her family in 1980. Although she wasn’t officially reported missing, her family had kept searching for her. The identification was made possible by detailed DNA testing.
