She Stayed Home Sick That Morning — Then Strangers Came to Her Door
On September 21, 2007, 12-year-old Emily Elizabeth Haddock was home sick from school, recovering from strep throat. She was inside her family's home near Vass, North Carolina, unaware that several young men were moving through the neighborhood looking for houses to burglarize.
According to investigators, the group had been breaking into homes, and when they entered Emily's house, they were not expecting anyone to be there. But Emily was inside, alone.
What happened next was horrifying. Michael Graham Currie and Sherrod Harrison broke into the home, and Currie shot Emily twice in the head with a .22-caliber handgun. Investigators said the intruders had intended to burglarize the house but were surprised to discover the young girl inside.
Later that day, Emily's grandfather stopped by the house to check on her. Instead of finding his granddaughter recovering from an illness, he discovered that she had been killed.
The investigation quickly expanded beyond the two men who entered the home. Five people were eventually charged in connection with Emily's death, and the case would take years to fully work its way through the courts.
But for Emily's family, the legal proceedings could never change the most devastating fact: a 12-year-old girl who had simply stayed home from school that morning would never come home again.
Michael Currie eventually pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and breaking and entering in 2010. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Other defendants received sentences ranging from several years in prison to additional convictions related to the murder and concealment of evidence.
