This photo wasn’t taken by a bystander. It was taken by Patricia Birmingham herself, seconds before she was k*lled outside her home in Spring, Texas.
In December 2021, prosecutors said Patricia was recording during a confrontation with her husband, Carey Birmingham. The footage shows him arguing with her in the driveway, and investigators said the encounter ended with him shooting her. The video later became central evidence in court, because it captured her final moments in real time.
In March 2024, an all-women jury sentenced Carey Birmingham to 10 years in prison for Patricia’s d*ath, along with a fine.
Under Texas law, he is expected to be eligible for parole after five years, a detail that sparked widespread outrage and renewed debate about how the legal system handles domestic violence cases.
It’s hard to shake the idea behind that image: Patricia wasn’t just documenting an argument. She was trying to leave proof. And even with proof, the ending still feels impossibly unfair.
