Couple Married 70 Years Die Holding Hands After Car Crash
A long-time married couple from Thurmont, Maryland, passed away this week after a car wreck, ending their seven decades together in a poignant way.
Kenneth Oland, 90, and his wife Marilyn, 88, got into the crash on February 24th when they got t-boned on the side. Both Olands were airlifted to a trauma center in Baltimore.
Six days after the accident, on March 2nd, hospital staff took the couple off life support. They positioned their beds side by side so Kenneth and Marilyn could hold hands as they died.
The Olands tied the knot back in 1955 and settled in Thurmont by 1963. They raised three kids and had five grandkids and six great-grandkids. Locals knew them as regulars at the Thurmont Senior Center, where they'd grab lunch, play bingo, and hang out. Kenneth stopped by for meals every day, and Marilyn often brought her special pumpkin pie or orange fluff salad to share at spots like the Kountry Kitchen Restaurant.
Their granddaughter Kristie Hopkins shared with FOX5 DC that beyond their long marriage, their real legacy was being kind, humble folks who helped anyone in need. She said they chose to stick together every day and even leave the world that way. Friends echoed that, with one telling the station you never saw one without the other, and another noting the big hole their passing leaves in the community.
