Mom Who Got Lip Injections While Son Died in 116-Degree Car Learns Fate
A 20-year-old mother from California has accepted a plea deal in the case involving the death of her one-year-old son, who was left in a hot car while she underwent a cosmetic procedure.
Maya Hernandez pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter and two enhancements for child cruelty on Wednesday, resulting in the dismissal of her original first-degree murder charge. The agreement caps her potential sentence at 15 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for March 5th.
The incident occurred on June 29, 2025, in Bakersfield, where Hernandez left her sons, one-year-old Amillio Gutierrez and two-year-old Mateo, in her Toyota Corolla for more than two hours while she received lip injections at a medical spa.
Prosecutors stated that the procedure itself lasted about 20 minutes, but Hernandez remained inside chatting about her Fourth of July plans for an additional two hours. The vehicle's interior reached 116 degrees Fahrenheit. Hernandez's defense claimed she had left the air conditioning set to 60 degrees and provided snacks for the children, but the car automatically shut off after an hour.
Upon returning, Hernandez found Amillio limp and purple, with an internal temperature of 107.2 degrees Fahrenheit when he arrived at the emergency room, where he was pronounced dead. Mateo, with a temperature of 99 degrees Fahrenheit, survived.
