On March 27, 2009, little 8-year-old Sandra Cantu walked out of her home in Tracy, California, excited to play with her friends like she always did. But that afternoon turned into a nightmare — she never came back.
For ten long days, her family and the entire community searched and hoped. Then the truth came in the most heartbreaking way. Sandra’s body was found inside a suitcase that had been tossed into an irrigation pond.
The suitcase belonged to 28-year-old Melissa Huckaby — a mother and Sunday school teacher who lived in the same mobile home park. It was almost impossible for the community to believe, but Huckaby confessed. She admitted she had taken Sandra into her home, drugged her, and k*illed her.
To this day, no one truly knows why she did it. Detectives suggested she might have been unstable or desperate for attention, but there was never a solid explanation. Even Huckaby herself later said, “I still cannot understand why I did what I did. This is a question I will struggle with for the rest of my life.”
