CCTV footage captured 5-year-old Shaniya Davis being carried through a hotel hallway by the man who would later be convicted of her m*rder, after her mother allegedly handed her over to settle a $200 debt.

Shaniya’s mother, Antoinette Davis, initially reported her daughter missing, prompting a large search effort across Fayetteville, North Carolina. Investigators soon uncovered that Antoinette had already been taken into custody on charges related to trafficking her daughter. She later admitted in court that she had allowed a man access to Shaniya as a way to repay money she owed.

A few days later, Shaniya’s body was discovered in a wooded area outside Fayetteville. The man seen carrying her in the hotel footage, Mario Andretti McNeill, was arrested and charged shortly afterward. Prosecutors later established that Shaniya had been assaulted and strangled before her d**th.

Antoinette Davis ultimately received a sentence of at least 17 and a half years in prison for her role in the crime. McNeill was convicted of capital m*rder and was given the d*ath penalty, bringing one of North Carolina’s most heartbreaking cases to a close.

That same day, her body was examined. It was found that she had suffered serious injuries to her head and neck before being strangled to death about 48 hours before her body was found. Despite many years of hard work by investigators, the identity of the Buckskin Girl remained unknown for over 30 years. On April 9, 2018, the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory announced that they had identified the woman as 21-year-old Marcia Lenore King from Little Rock, Arkansas.
