On September 19, 1991, while hiking in the Ötztal Valley of the Austrian Alps, German couple Erika and Helmut Simon made a startling discovery. They stumbled upon what they believed to be the remains of a lost mountain climber, preserved in the ice. But their find was far older than they imagined—scientists later dated the body to over 5,300 years ago. The mummy became known as Ötzi the Iceman, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, offering an unprecedented look into Copper Age life.

Surrounding Ötzi were a remarkable array of tools and possessions that had been preserved alongside him. These included a finely crafted copper axe, a flint-bladed knife in a woven sheath, a bow with unfinished arrows, and two wooden containers lined with maple leaves. Pieces of a backpack, a leather pouch containing small tools, and his clothing—made of leather, fur, and plant fibers—gave researchers a detailed understanding of his life and survival in the harsh alpine climate. His shoes were especially notable, built for warmth and grip on snowy terrain.

However, Ötzi’s story took a darker turn when researchers discovered an arrowhead lodged in his left shoulder and evidence of other injuries. This led to the theory that he had been murdered, possibly ambushed while trying to escape. Some believe the mummy is cursed: Helmut Simon, Ötzi’s discoverer, died in 2004 after falling during a hike and was later found frozen, echoing the Iceman’s fate. While not everyone believes in the so-called "curse of the Iceman," the string of eerie events that followed his discovery has given many pause. Perhaps, as some say, it’s best to let the ancient dead rest undisturbed.
